KCSE tips on how to apply for diploma or degree courses via KUCCPS

With the early release of the KCSE results, the candidates have the opportunity to choose their degree or diploma courses with the full knowledge of their KCSE results, unlike previous years.

All students who scored an aggregate of C+ and above will be eligible to join a University to pursue a degree course while those who scored a mean grade of C- and C qualify to be admitted for a diploma course.

These two categories of students will be placed by Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Services (KUCCPS) to their preferred programme based on merit and the preferred course as indicated in their application. These students will be government funded through a cost sharing programme in which the Government bears the lion’s share of the cost.

How do I get placed?

Ideally all students who attained a C+ and above will be placed in a degree programme, while those who scored C- and C will be placed to a diploma programme. However, you must have applied for you to be placed. Diploma programmes opportunities are also available to other KCSE candidates from previous year’s such 2016, 2015, etc.

However, it’s important to note that a student must apply though the KUCCPS online portal once it opens. Those students who qualify for degrees but did not indicate their preferred course choices are randomly placed into vacant programmes.

Important tips during your application

A. Know the course you want to pursue.

Make sure you know the course you want to pursue. You can get a lot of information on available courses that are government sponsored from the ElimuAdvisor portal.

B. Check whether you qualify for the course you want.

All degree programmes are clustered so that programmes with similar requirements are placed in the same cluster.

ElimuAdvisor portal will provide all the programme’s cluster information. The portal also provides information on the cluster’s subjects.  For example the figure below shows the cluster subject for cluster 1 which is Law and Legal degree

Note: Programmes are competitive and students are placed in a particular programme based on merit i.e. cluster points. For information on what weighted cluster point are and how to calculate them, see  “KUCCPS Cut off points for Universities in Kenya

 C. Choose the preferred course

KUCCPS gives students three opportunities to do this. These are;

  • At School –  This takes place in school during the 3rd term.
  • First revision – This is the opportunity given to students by KUCCPS to revise their course choices or make fresh application in case they had not applied earlier (at school).
  • Second revision – Normally comes at the tail end of the placement process and is meant for those students who do not qualify to be placed on any of the courses they selected earlier.
  • NOTE: The only courses available for you to select at this stage will be the none competitive courses which did not fill up during placement. You have fewer choices at this point.

D. Confirm your choices during first revision

  • When KUCCPS portal is open for first revision, ensure your selection was entered correctly.
  • In case you find your application missing, you can always follow it up with your school principal or fill a fresh application.
  • If there was an error in filling, take time and make corrections.
  • If you also changed your mind especially after getting your KCSE results or came accross exciting courses on the  ElimuAdvisor portal use this new information to make an informed choice.
