KUCCPS Cut off points for Universities in Kenya

I will attempt to explain what University programmes KCSE cut-off points are, the elimuadvisor way…easy.

Consider this hypothetical scenario:

In 2016, 600 hundred students applied for medicine at University of Kenya (for example) . The capacity for medicine at UoK is 120. This means only 120 students can be admitted for medicine at UoK, against a demand of 600.

Therefore, KUCCPS has to fairly decide who should be admitted. This means, the 600 applicants have to be ranked using the weighted cluster points.

KUCCPS then draws a line at the 120th candidate in the rank. The weighted cluster of the 120th candidate becomes the cut-off points for Medicine at UoK.

What if we a tie at the 120th position?

When there is a tie at the 120th position, KUCCPS must make a decision based on the number of people who are in the tie. They can either exceed the capacity by the number of people in the tie at the 12oth position or to raise the cut-off to the 119th position.

Other considerations that come into effect in breaking the tie are your degree choices order of preference e.g. 1a, 1b, 1c. Look out for our videos at elimuadvisor channel on you tube (coming soon).

Minimum subject(s) requirements

In some programmes like Law, there are specific KCSE subject requirements in addition to meeting the cut off. For example, for Law, you must have at minimum a B plain in English. This means, even if you met the cut-off for Law, and you scored less than a B in English, you will not be considered for Law. Ooops.

As you can see, the cut-off point for a programme has two determining parameters; capacity of the programme, and the number of the qualified applicants. Therefore, it is impossible to know with certainty the actual cut-off of a given programme until after the selection process.
